Glass in the Wild (Washington, DC)

So I finally got over my reservations of wearing Glass out and around Washington, DC.

I jumped on the Metro and decided to take a little trip to the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Renwick Gallery:

As expected, there were a number of strange looks and the occasional teenage tourist obnoxiously yelling out, "hey, don't take my picture!" Most museum staff just looked at me curiously from a distance- a few of them mentioned it was the first time they had ever seen Glass.

I rather like the Washington Monument with all the scaffolding.

It was nice to just walk, basically soaking in the sun and DC without having to pull out or glance at my phone. If I wanted to know what time it was, I just gave my head a quick nod. Having Glass on was strangely freeing. It was nice to just snap a few photos with ease and minimal disruption.

Feeling rather good about the entire experience, I decided on an encore outing and donned Glass out to a local mall- bad idea. Everyone and their mother was yelling and asking to try my Glass- just non-stop harassment.  I get that Glass is a bit odd and still extremely new, but I am certainly not digging the unsolicited intrusion into my space.

So how are other Glass explorers dealing with this kind of unwanted attention?

Up next: taking Glass out to a ballgame...

Baaaaaaa

I must admit, I am feeling a bit sheepish about wearing Glass out in public in Washington DC. San Francisco or New York City seem like more optimal places to be out in the "wild" with Glass.

Conversely, Kenya and Malawi would have also been more comfortable places to be sporting Glass. Had I gotten Glass 30 days ago, I could have taken it with me on an epic trip to Korea, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, and France. What would I have done with all those Glass frequent flyer miles?

Something about DC is unsettling, but I shall get over this soon. Bring it!

Down the Glass Hole?

[Tangerine, you had me at 'hello.']

So after many months of waiting, I finally picked up my Glass in New York City. Google set up a little loft across the street from their offices in Chelsea Market just for this purpose. As with all things Google, it was trendy, clean, well-designed, neat, and passed the optics test.

A friendly Google rep walked me through the basic features and off I went into the wild!

First impressions- this is an amazing development in the world of wearables. As expected, the currently available apps and their respective functionality is limited, but Google has promised monthly updates to the software and opportunities to test new apps created by developers. I am amazed by how light the device is and how unobtrusive the video screen is. Felt a bit like a zoo animal walking around New York City with this thing on, and I suspect this aspect will be much worse back in Washington, DC. Any fellow Glass Explorers in the DC metro area?

I'll reserve further comment until I've had a chance to play with the device more "in the wild," but I suspect Glass is certainly much more than the latest tech fad. The device will clearly evolve and go through many iterations, but Glass is definitely going to disrupt a few industries and opens up some amazing possibilities.
